Elisabeth Elliot wurde in Belgien als Tochter einer Missionarsfamilie geboren. 1948 schloss sie ihre Ausbildung am Wheaton College ab und bereitete sich darauf vor, als Missionarin nach Südamerika auszureisen. 1952 begann sie mit ihrer Tätigkeit in den Anden. 1953 heiratete sie Jim Elliot, der ebenfalls am Wheaton College studiert hatte. Die Elliots arbeiteten danach als Missionare im östlichen Teil von Ecuador. Aus der Ehe ging eine Tochter hervor. Im Januar 1956 wurden ihr Ehemann und vier weitere Missionare von einer Gruppe Huaorani getötet.Elisabeth Elliott setzte ihre Missionstätigkeit nach dem Tod ihres Mannes fort.
